This year Hamburg celebrates the 70 anniversary of Operation Gomorrah which was the savage night bombing of Hamburg by the RAF during the summer of 1943.
Now the German town has decided to open a museum to explore the effects of this bombing and other major bombings such as the one which the town Dresde suffered in February 1945.
According to Malte Thieben the aim of the museum is to:
"Try and recover the memory of what was the air war"
In order to do this the exposition recreates the smell of burning corpses and the sound of the bombs falling on the ground.
The museum is located on the Tower of Saint Nicholas. the location of the museum is of great importance as it was the highest tower in the town and the one which British pilots used to guide themselves in order to drop their deadly charge.
